I am Hilary Bowen Ba(Hons), ALCM, and I have been an active musician for many years, starting learning at the age of seven. Playing both piano and violin (with a brief foray into the cello), I had passed all my Associated Board examinations by the age of 16, with distinction. I then continued my studies of the practical, historical and theoretical craft, graduating from Reading University in 1991 with an honours music degree. After that, I set myself the goal of becoming an Associate of the London College of Music, gaining a diploma there.

I have played piano for childrens’ concerts, as an accompaniment to ballet and tap classes, choirs and instrumental soloists. I regularly play violin as part of a local orchestra and find this benefits my general musicianship as well as providing a camaraderie that the piano doesn’t always offer.
I am passionate about bringing out the best in my pupils, dealing with their own individual challenges and finding new ways to teach old lessons. I find that games, entertainment and mutual collaboration make for a pleasant learning environment and motivate the pupils to learn and grow for their own benefit. I’m happy to teach exam based curriculae and will also teach purely for fun or self improvement, depending on the goals of the client. Adults and children alike are welcome to learn. Music is for everyone!
